All wasps die in the winter except mated females. These overwinter in leaf litter and in walls.

I think the previous 2 answers are referring to yellow jackets or hornets. Wasps all die in the winter except for the queens who find a place to hibernate and if it's a cold winter some of the queens will freeze too. In the spring they start a new nest and lay eggs.

They hibernate in their nests, that they build where ever they can find a warm spot. One time my parents and I heard a lot of buzzing when spring had came back around and we found a Large nest of wasps in the section connecting the spouting to our roof. It was at least a foot in diameter and 3 inches in width.

Actually they leave their nests and gather into tightly enclosed spaces. Such as inside the walls of storage buildings. They gather inside by the thousands. I've done remodeling work & have found them several times. They will wake up & move around if you disturb them , but they cant fly when its cold.
