Mad Dogs and Englishmen a song by Noel Coward. Based on the Indian observation that most civilized people took siesta during the heat of the day in the tropics.

Noel Coward did a song about 'Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun', referring to British Empire administrators and soldiers in hot places like India and Africa. They were often sun-burnt and red in the face.

The locals and dogs (unless they were mad) had the good sense to stay in the shade.
