Football is a general term which covers many games. The is Rugby Football, Association Football (soccer), Australian Rules Football, American Football (Gridiron) etc.
In England, Football usually means Association Football, i.e. game played under the rules of the Football association (FA).
Association Football is a bit of a mouthful and has been contracted to Soccer,in the same way that Rugby Football has been contracted to Rugger, which is how some people in England refer to Rugby.
