okay lets be real,
unless you dont have a life no one gets the 8-9 hours recomended. The thing is your body gets use to what the conditions are. I sleep 4-5 hours everynight for the past couple years. It takes a while to get use to cutting back or adding more time to your sleep. During that transition your bodys imune system will be weak. Once your body adepts you will be okay. The minimum amount of sleep for your body not to start breaking down is 2-3 hours.
One thing I tried before was sleeping 1/2 hour every 4 hours. At work during lunch, after work, nightime, and in the morning. Its tough but its the best way if you dont have time to sleep more than 2-3 hours. Good luck

everyone needs 30 minutes more than we got:-)........no really everyone is different a good rule of thumb is children need 8-10 hrs and grown ups need 6-8 hrs. however older people need less sleep that is because there is a hormone produced by the brain that tells us when to sleep and when to wake and as we get older we have less of this hormone and that is also why everyone is different to a certain degree.but lack of sleep can cause health problems and depression and working a night shift is especially hard because our bodies are not used to being up at night and sleeping during the day we are not nocturnal mammals.

It vaires from person to person....for me I need about 6-7 hours in order to function properly. Then you have a small child you requires 10+ hours daily.

When I was younger I needed only 4-5 hours...I have gotten a little older..I just require more now for my mind and body to re-set so to speak.

Different people have different needs. Edison got by on maybe 2 hours of sleep. Teenagers seem to need 12 hours. One general guideline I heard was that if you need to snooze your alarm clock every morning, you're not getting enough sleep.
