I'm not sure what the "best" is, or even if there is one as they all offer so many different options. I have an HP and find it is better than my Gateway was, and according to friends who have purchased any Dell products better than those. However, many times it is up to personal choice. One feature I would look at is the power source. The cord that goes into the computer. Check to see if it is just a single pin coming from the computer that you plug the source into (like any of the normal adapters), or, if it has a three pronged receiver, the ones with three are much more durable, and will definitely stand the test of time. The one pin type get loose very quickly and you have to be very careful with the cord, if you like to move around with your lap top like i do, (why it is a laptop) the one pin receiver will give you headaches.

The only brand that I will recommend wholeheartedly is HP. We have two HP notebooks at home, and they work wonderfully. Plus, if you order from their website, you can customize your system for whatever your needs happen to be.

I really don't recommend Gateway notebooks at all. The one I had had constant problems with overheating even when it was being used with a chill mat. Also, I'd purchased the double capacity battery for it--it got about the same amount of time on it that the regular battery for my HP notebook does.

My computer geek friend just insisted I buy a Dell Latitude as apparently buying anything else is a waste of money. I agree that they are sturdy, built to last machines. You can also get the d-dock setup and easily use it as a desk top.

Your best bet to get thtis info is to checkout http://www.consumerreports.org, and do a search for latops there. I'll give you what I found , but it may not be very concise, as the formatting will probably be screwed up:
