Exactly, if you bring it to your bosses attention first, he will respect you for that. Just tell him that you wanted him to hear it from you. Tell him what had happened in a breif explanation and tell him that you hope your actions with another co-worker doesnt skew his image that he has for you. By telling him first, he gtes to hear your side of the story on your behalf rather than him asking you. I think he wouldnt mind hearing it from you.

Bad advice from Pirate Girl. By bringing your boss into it simply because of the fight you're escalating the conflict while your efforts should be directed towards smoothing things over. Bosses hate being brought into these fights.
It's OK to have a fight at work unless you called him some real bad names or fought in front of a customer. You don't need to apologize unless cooperating with this guy on daily basis is an important part of your job. There is a good chance that this issue will blow over, but if you do find yourself in a situation where you have to apologize to him for the sake of being able to work together, make sure that you give him the reasons why you refused to help him. That way, he will be less likely to take you for granted.

NIP it in the BUD!
Go to your boss today, and be grown up. Tell boss what you did.Don't whine or make excuses. Just go there and say boss should hear it from you first.
Boss already knows which of his workers work and which goof off. I f boss doesn't he needs to know. You are not tattling. You are protecting your job, and doing your job.
Don't apologize to the goober. He wronged YOU. He is cheating your company.
If you touched him, or swore at him, you might mend that fence.
He should apologize to you. He has to know he was out of line.
Once you tell your boss, you are in the clear. Anyone would respect you for trying to keep things professional. Anyone would respect you for not being afraid of your boss.
WRITE DOWN everything that has happened, and when you go to your boss, write that down, too. Mail it to yourself, and don't open it.
Store it away, and if you have any more trouble with the guy or yoru boss, it will be there to document your situation, and you might be able to sue for harassment or unlawful firing--if it devevelops LATER ON!
Don't let some little pissant intimidate you! Stick up for yourself.
Good luck.

As a small business owner, I can tell you that I wouldn't fire anyone because of something such as this. Should it come up, I'd be more inclined to fire my daughter's friend. I don't pay my employees to sit around and shoot the shi_. I pay them to perform. Nor do I pay them to play out their petty high school spats on my time. I suggest that you say nothing unless your boss brings it up -- or the daughter's friend pushes the issue. If the latter happens, offer to take him by the hand over to the boss and request to have a closed door conference.

There are specific websites which have information on dealing with bad bosses, and bad coworkers because there are legal issues here and the quality of life in a place of employment affects many many things my advice to you is impossible that you can request that the boss install audiovideo monitoring hardware and software to observe the unproductive behaviors of other employees. And then you will have the evidence you need with which to dispute any unfair actions. I mention information, which is much better suited for the overall perspective of situations which you would deal with in your life on my personal page, which is linked on my profile.

The relationship doesn't sound that close that you should worry; especially if you were doing your own job at the time and refused to help someone else finish because he wasn't doing his.. any witness's?
If your boss calls you on it tell the truth.. if you get fired go straight to unemployment and tell them.
That isn't even near a firing offense.

I would just wait to see if anything comes of it. If you go to your boss right away, you may be seen as "tattler". If the boss does mention it, just tell him/her the truth. If you get fired you can always file a lawsuit for wrongful termination or just move on to a new job. Don't apologize, you did nothing wrong.

tell your boss about the fight before he does....or he may tell anyone about it....it doesn't sound like he is a good employee at all...but.......never fight like that at work. if there is a problem and you think it is getting out of hand...call in a witness or the boss...keeping your cool with earn you more points than anything else....grace under pressure...

I would tell the boss one on one why you were upset with the guy( you're doing your job, and shouldn't have to do his too) I think you could say something like, I wanted you to hear it from me first, and I don't have an ongoing problem with this guy and It just happened I wanted to be honest hope y0u don't let me go because of it, which he's gonna tell you that you have nothing to worry about it....
