Well right now we are at the stage of hope more then reality. I think however, we can expect some things.

1. Accountability - For the first time in 6 years there actually will be oversight by Congress of the administration. I have a strong feeling that our conservative friends are not going to like what crawls out from under some of those rocks.

2. Pushing of a Progressive Agenda - While big issues like National Health Care will be difficult to pass there are smaller issues that the Dems will push that will be very difficult for Bush to veto. Beholden to corporate interests certain things have never been allowed to be considered by Bush as they did not want to feel a negative public reaction. Among these are 1. Minimum Wage Increase. 2. Competitive drug prices for Medicare. 3. Extending Medicare coverage to children. 4. Tax breaks and subsidies for alternative energy technology.

Many of these issues Republicans have claimed to support yet never provided any funding.

3. There will be a shift in environmental policy.

4. Foreign Policy - While normally the reign of the President the changing tide has already begun to force Bush to revise his policy away from the Neo-Con agenda. Instead, perhaps diplomacy will again become a matter of course rather then a carrot provided for nations that obey.

5. Corruption - This is an area we have to cross our fingers on. There is a huge opening for the Dem's to crack down on this in Congress and in the political system. Doing so would prove popular but do they have the stomach to face their own demons. This we shall see.

6. Fiscal Policy - I never thought I would say this but it seems like the Dem's are taking on the roll of traditional conservatives in trying to find some fiscal sanity in the government. We are hemmoraging money at the present and I think they will act to curtail this weather it is through the war or pork.

Thank you for your intelligent question. It is nice to respond to a person seeking a conversation and not trying to express a political agenda.

Republicans will make constructive components. Taking the Senate isn't likely this election; taking the homestead will require a 40 seat replace, that's particularly in the area of threat. What might I do? Vote returned in 2012!

Politically what it does is restore a balance of power to the government, there will have to be compromise if either side wants to get anything done. That is a good thing. Socially I do not see any changes as the president has veto power. He may allow a raise in minimum wage as it is long overdue.

I think it's proof positive that the majority of Americans actually believe it makes a difference.

Amazingly enough, even what's coming in the next two years (which will be remarkably like the previous twenty) won't clue them in.

I personally have been positively surprised by the quickness of the tone change in US foreign politics. I suppose Democrats are to thank for this- or is it just that Rumsfeld is gone? :O
