Hello there,
I am part Native American thought I would put some input.
The plant known as "Purple Cone Flower also know as BitterRoot" is a good one it is a perennial so it comes back every year--it is more commonly know as Echinacea now however. The roots grow long and very strong and used to be used for pain if they were chewed...say for a toothache.
Indian paintbrush is a good pick as well, Columbine too.
These are all perennials and when planted they may not bloom much the first year but they may, and they get stronger the following year and increasingly more hardy as the root system expands.
good luck--jammie girl

There are very few plants that are endemic nationwide, and you probably wouldn't get a very interesting garden if it were only something that grows all across our continent. Find a native plant nursery in your region and they will tell you, or ask us a more specific question based on where you are.
If you want to grow plants that are emblematic of the 50 states, you can check out each State's website and find out which official State Flowers are actually native to the state. Some of them may be difficult to grow where you live and so won't be 'native' in the gardening sense, but they will be 'native' in the geographic sense and they will certainly be interesting and patriotic in some way if a legislature allowed themselves to pick them out.
