My daughter is 6 months old and I am still breastfeeding and intend to for 1year. Lately she is screaming when it is time to nurse. She eats babyfood 3 times a day, but she still needs to nurse. Does anyone know what is going on? She refuses the bottle from everyone. She cannot have regular formula due to a few health factors, so I want to keep breastfeeding. She currently has an ear infections and is on antibiotics, is that why? Any ideas? Please!!

When you lay your baby on her side to nurse, her infected ears become very painful, that is proboly why she is screaming.
Try the "Football" hold when you nurse, this will allow her to be "heads-up" and not putting pressure on either ears.
Also, watch out for thrush while using antibiotics.

You're doing great by breastfeeding, keep it up!

I would normally say it's a nursing strike. As, my son had a few of those as we nursed (he is now 8 months). But, because you mention the ear infection I'm sure it's the ear infection. Especially if he is screaming for breast or bottle. That is the classic tell tale sign of an ear infection!

Have you tried using a cup? Or, let him nurse while sitting/standing. I know it sounds weird, but it seemed to help my son.

It should get easier as the antibiotics kick in.

Good Luck!! You can get through this :))

It is most likely the ear infection. Even a bottle fed baby will scream when the drink. Ear infections really hurt. Try giving her a dose of tylenol about thirty minutes before you expect her to eat. It may dull the pain enough so she can eat. Also there are ear drops that your doc can give that numb the ear. They may call them in for her since she is not wanting to eat.Tylenol is dosed according to weight. It is 15 mg/kg. So a 15 lb baby would take 1.1 ml. Good Luck.

I would think it's perfectly normal for a 6 month old to scream when she has an ear infection. I used to get them when I was 5 and it was miserable and at her age, the only way she can communicate to you is by screaming. Just try to sooth her and hopefully the antibiotics will kick it out of her system. Best of luck to you and your little one.

It could be her ear infection is hurting and depending on how she is laying while breastfeeding, there may be pressure in her ears causing pain. Try putting her in a different postion while feeding. Maybe wiat till after her medication kicks in to try alos so some of the pain is eased.

That is probably the reason why. She will be on the antibiotics for at least 10 days. If i were you I would consult her pediatrician and let him or her know what is going on. He may be able to figure out a solution for you. Good luck and kudos to you for breastfeeding.

Ear infection will do it for sure. It will pass once the ear infection is gone, try giving some tylenol about 1/2hr before is time to feed, and it might make it a bit easier.

Call your health visitor, maybe the illness is putting her off food. All 3 of my children go off their food when they are poorly but breastfed babies tend to suckle for comfort so this may be a matter for you to discuss with a health professional
