We purchased a matched set, box springs and mattress, less than two years ago and now the mattress is sagging. It was not an inexpensive set and now they will give us a prorated amount of money for a new set. Can I keep my box spring and just get a new mattress?

I did away with the box springs years ago. I built a solid wooden platform to take the place of the box springs and now I just buy the mattress. Works out great and I like the firmness it gives. Sellers of mattresses and box springs will tell you you have to buy the set "to keep your warranty" but in reality they are just telling you that to sell you something else. Buy the new mattress and forget the new box springs.

Yes. You see mismatched sets in discount stores all the time. That is because furniture stores will sell one piece of the set and if they cannot get a match or a sale for the remaining piece they will turn around and resell them to those stores.
