Sand, especially white sand is not a good idea at all.

Firstly, it doesn't really work well in an most acquarium filters unless you are using an under-gravel type filter and even then you have to make sure that the sand cant migrate below the filter base.

Secondly: How long do you think it will stay "white"????
It is going to get somewhat discolored over time and there is no way you will be able to preclude/avoid that.

If I were you and you wanted a more "sandy" look than a "gravel" look then I'd look into some of the finer granule gravels that are available. Sand just isn't a great acquarium medium.

Do some thinking and go to a real good acquarium store and talk with the owner for some help on this. There are some nice lighter colored gravels available other than "very white sand".

Good luck.

If you can find Pool Filter Sand, it is pretty white. Its not the whitest I've seen though.

Like said above, a very white substrate can sometimes stress a fish out. Darker colors are more subdued, so calm them more.

There are some playsands (for kids) that come very white. Course you have to see an open bag to tell the color, and they come in 40lb bags. But the bags are usually only about 3 bucks each, and the sand is clean and pretty dust-free, and is useful for other stuff too, like to put on icy walkways, etc.
Course, this time of year, it could be kinda hard to find . . .

We tried sand in our 55 gallon tank, don't do it, it gets into the filter, monkey's with it, makes the filter make a "grinding" noise, it eventually ruined the filter. It was a pain in the a s s to clean, cause we siphon out 1/4 of our tank every few months. Personally, I think that brown natural looking stones look the best.
