Your hard drive is graphed into a grid when you partition a hard drive. Those sections are blocks in which data is stored. It is normally smaller than your average file so it is stored in more than one block on the hard drive. A contiguous file means that it is stored in the blocks that come one after the other, and there is no information in the middle of the blocks.

Example: You have blocks 1-100 free on your hard drive, you save a file and it takes up blocks 30,31, and 32. Since the blocks come one after the other, the file is contiguous. If there is data on the hard drive and the file has to be separated into different parts of the drive. Say that blocks 2,5, and 7 are used. You save a file and it uses block 1,3,4, and 6. This is an example of a fragmented file because it is separated. Hope this helps.

A file on disk that is not broken apart. All sectors are adjacent to each other. A contiguous file is faster to read and write than one that is fragmented.
