India has an active space program. Like all other space programs (e.g. NASA), there is always the question of whether or not a nation should spend money on research of any kind when the same money could be used for humanitarian purposes. In the long run, I beleive that benefits from research programs pay off big time for the citizens of that nation and the world.
NASA's budget is a small fraction (less than 1%) of the USA's total budget and NASA has produced great advancements in science and products used in non-space fields to the advantage of all humankind.
For comparison, very succesful corporations dedicate approximately 18% of their income to research.
See the Indian Space Research Organization's web site at:

Hope this helps!

All other arguments aside, one thing everyone seems to forget is when you are working on a program like space mission, you are doing a lot of research and lot of different fields - NOT just space. for example, you would be doing a lot of research in field of automotive industry, fuel, material, building, you can keep on naming them. You usually end up with a LOT of new products out of such research. Research itself provides quite a few jobs, to top that when new products and new business come out of it, it provides people in general a lot more business/jobs etc and pumps up the economy as well. So research is not just something no one uses. You could try finding over net how many new products came about in market as a result of NASA research (and other space agency research for that matter).

Spending on villages is probably not a good idea. Considering the extent of corruption, most of such money would end up with corrupt ministers and officials. Space programmes and concerned departments are far less corrupt.

I would say India should start spending more money for research and space missions. The people's attitude towards professional education should change as they always go for either engineering or medicine.Research should be encouraged in India...... People should start learn more about physics,chemistry,maths...!!!!....
It should change as the "Intellect country"...

What do you want, more villages or the ability to travel in space? Neither is exactly essential, is it?
