It all has to do with power and money. The protestants,
catholics and muslims are all the same, preying on the
followers gullibility that heaven awaits them after they die.
In the 16th Century. the catholics had their inquisition
so that they can confiscate your wealth. Too little have
been done by the religious leaders to help out the poor
starving african nations. I can go on and on about all the
stupid religions meddling in politics and inciting the
followers to kill rather than love their fellow men.

I am a Catholic too.
Catholicism today is very tolerant of other peaceful religions. It will seek to convert those from other religions if given the opportunity, but not forcibly. This seems only natural, as catholicism, like other religions, believes that it knows the closest way of following God's intent.
Religion has to be somewhat close-minded. We believe we know the truth, or that we know the closest thing to the truth. To make that assertion we must be prepared to defend it, which means that people who don't believe as we do are probably misguided. This doesn't mean we villify them, or even try to convert them. We respect their choice, whether it's right or wrong, as adults should do.

Part of having faith in your religion involves the belief that you are RIGHT, this invariably leads to the conclusion that everyone else is WRONG.
This is the main problem, I think, unless you are a Bahaist and believe that everyone is right, or a Buddhist who doesn't care about gods one way or another.
Atheists, of course, are very much guilty of believing that everyone who holds religious beliefs are wrong- but since that IS their core belief, and for that belief to exist there has to be religious groups around so that the Atheist can point to them and know how wrong they are. Logically, Atheists need religions to survive as an ideology.

The problem is with religous freaks, in other words, those who belive that it is there personal mission in life to convert anyone who is a "non beliver" at all cost. So many groups that claim to be christian so often don't come close to understanding what it meens to be like Christ. I will never claim to be a christian although I belive in Christ and his teachings and have been condemned by many because of it. There has never been peace on this earth and as much as I would like to belive there can be, I don't belive we will see anthing close to it as long as humans walk this earth. It's hard to sit back and watch what is happening especially in these times, but as long as there are profits to be made from the weaker people of this world, there will always be a religous group waiting with outreached greedy hands. The important thing is to belive in a higher power and to try to live each day with the goal of becoming a better person. As long as you head down that path I belive that your afterlife is secure. I commend you for not trying to push your religion into others faces. People like yourself should breed millions for our future.

Although it is not constitutional in the US the only way to fix the problems with religious differences is to make it illegal to talk about religion. Worship as you wish but don't bug everyone else with it.
If you go to the same church with someone your whole life and they sit next to you in the pew, they will still not believe exactly as you do. No one believes in god the same way, so no one will ever truly agree on it. As long as people think their way is the only way we will have horrible religious problems.

So long as your religious beliefs or your religion does no harm to others, I'm all for that.
But those Catholic priests have simply got to stop molesting little children.
And Muslim holy men have got to stop ordering the murder of what they call infidels.
Now you see the problem with your statement? It's impossible! And it's been impossible since the dawn of mankind.

I do not think the problem is religion. It is people who turn it around and use religion as an excuse.

regretfully the religions themselves encourage converting or shunning non-believers in most cases
that leaves the believer in a quandary - how can you follow the religion but not the rules

That would appear to be too easy.
Too many people feel the need (for one reason or another) to criticize other's, whether it be religion, political party, lifestyle, etc.

I totally agree with you. I respect Islam but I can't get any respect for murdering radical Islamists.
