I am best friends with a woman who has a ten year old child. I would like to be his legal father but dont want to marry the mother. Is there a legal way to do this. His biological father is dead.

I don't know that it is possible to adopt , an alternative though, is to have his mother put you in her will as the childs' godparent, to raise him incase anything ever happens to her. In the mean time, just be his father, he will know in his heart, even though it is not on paper. The values you share with him will be there a lifetime wether it is legal or not.

You can legally adopt the child without being his father, though Im sure the mother must also consent. I'd contact an adoption lawyer.

You could adopt the child but that would mean you would have to be married.. get the point.. only a parent or step parent can adopt, since the child is not orphaned then you have no choice..

I really don't know for sure. Ask her if you could adopt him and share custody. Other than that, I would suggest you check with an attorney. Good luck.
