Your wireless adapter on your notebook is detecting a wireless router in range. The wireless signal is encrypted and in order to gain access you need the network key (password) to be able to use the signal. Unless whoever owns the internet access gives you the key you can use the signal.

Notebooks today are designed to actively seek wireless networks in the area and they try to connect. However, not all networks are open to everyone. Some administrators will restrict access to authorized people. So if you are in your own office, your administrator will give that key to you but if you are in a public place, then you probably can't.

Why don't you try to install your own wireless network at home?

If they are asking for a network key the network is secured. The key is just another word for "password".
