I had painters paint my bathroom, and they taped their plastic to the wood laminate on the side of my vanity. When they picked up the plastic, the laminate ripped right off.

I'm wondering if Old English Furniture polish would at least help make it not so noticeable, at least until I can figure out what to do with it.

It's down bare wood.

At least that's what it looks like to me. I don't know much about laminates. It's a cherry cabinet, and then matching laminate sides. It's very noticeable because the laminiate is a dark brown/reddish color and where they pulled it away is now beige.

If the outerlayer is the only thing missing and the surface of the laminate is fairly smooth, you may be able to paint it without too much obvious notice.

If the layers are missing then you may have to replce these with something like a good plastic/wood putty, then sand and paint. A good artist can paint over the putty or laminate to make it look like th original.

Your last effort is to replace the laminate. I would contact the painter or general contractor to see about some sort of remuneration for your loss.

One possible solution is to go to the hardware store and see if they have any shelf paper with adhesive back (sticky) that has a wood pattern and color that matches your vanity. I've seen this done to cover holes in doors and other repairs and it actually works quite well in certian circumstances. If the painters masking tape pulled it lose I doubt that it was a laminate that they pulled off, more likely a plastic coating in a wood color and pattern over the wood cabinet side. Use a sissors to cut to size.

When I got flooring they told me if the laminate got scratched I'd have to fill it in the with a similarly colored crayon until the scratched peices could be replaced. I ended up getting tile. You might get a better solution if you google 'Laminate Repair'. There are repair kits for just about anything.

you can sand the area, stain it with wood stainer to match the color, if it is a small area, use a crayon that matches the color and rub it in to blend.
GOOD LUCK!
