Mack The Knife "Words by Berthold Brecht and Music by Kurt Weill
English words added by Marc Blitzstein
written in 1928 for "Theme From the Threepenny Opera"
( "Drei Groschen Oper" )
and introduced in that production by Weill's wife, Lotte Lenya

Louis Armstrong recorded this song in September 1955,
the song and the opera were unknown even to opera fans.
Louis' recording made the song well known around the world.

Lotte Lenya, the original performer of the song
telephoned Louis to thank him for his wonderful rendition.

The song was recorded by Louis and the All Stars in 1955, 1956
and 1960 the Orchestra in 1955, with Eddie Condon in 1956,
and in Paris in 1965.

Oh, the Shark, Baby,
Has such Teeth, Dear
And he shows them
Pearly white

Just a Jackknife
Has old MacHeath, Baby
And he keeps it,
Out of Sight

You know when that Shark bites
With his Teeth, Baby
Scarlet Billows
Start to spread

Fancy Gloves, though,
Wears old MacHeath, Baby
So there's never, I said
Never a trace of red

Now on the Sidewalk, yeah
Oh Sunday morning, uh huh
Lies a Body
Just oozin' Life,

And Someone's sneakin'
Around the Corner
Could that Someone
Be Mack the Knife?

There's a Tugboat, yeah, ah
Down by the River dontcha know
Where a Cement Bag's
Just a'drooppin' on down

That Cement is just,
It's there for the weight, Dear
Five'll get ya ten ah
Old Macky's back in town

Now d'ja hear 'bout Louie Miller?
He disappeared, Baby
After drawin' out yeah
All his hard-earned Cash

And now MacHeath spends
Just like a Sailor
Could it be our Boy's
Done somethin' rash?

Now Jenny Diver, huh,
Sukey Tawdry yeah
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya
And old Lucy Brown

Oh, the Line forms
On the right, Baby
Now that Macky yeah
Is back in Town

I said Jenny Diver, whoa,
Sukey Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya
And old Lucy Brown

Yes, that Line forms
On the right, Baby
Now that Macky yeah ...
Is back in Town.....

Look out, old Macky's back!!

Mack the Knife, for sure. You wouldn't believe how many people recorded the song. Personal favourites, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, Nick Cave and Tom Waits.
