People want Favre to retire, and this guy is still playing. I love football and the NFL but, don't you think it's a little scewed up? When one guy can still START every game day, take a hit, produce, run, throw and pretty much do anything you ask of him. And the other is mediocre at best. I believe in letting a guy leave on his on terms but, if the media wants to bug the crap out of someone about retiring, let it be Testaverde.

“Going through the season with two quarterbacks, although it’s been fine to this point, it kind of made me nervous in terms of what would happen if anything happened to one of those two guys,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said yesterday. “So Vinny would be the third quarterback. Hopefully we’ll never need him. As I told him, I hope he doesn’t play at all.”
The natural question following such a signing is if Brady and Cassel are healthy. Both Belichick and Brady insist the two-time Super Bowl MVP is fine, while Cassel only briefly appeared on the injury report two weeks ago when the Patriots were loading it with players to combat similar tactics by the Colts.
Cassel was not on the injury report yesterday and Belichick bristled when asked if Testaverde could compete with him for the backup spot.
“Did I say that?” Belichick said. “I’m not saying that. I didn’t say it and don’t even start that. He’s an emergency quarterback. He’s the third quarterback. He’ll be inactive every game as the third quarterback unless something happens to those other two guys. I don’t know how I could possibly be any clearer about that. There’s no need to ask that question six more times and get the same answer either. He’s the third quarterback.”
Testaverde is fine with that. He harbors no illusions of becoming an NFL starter again.
“I guess I’m here because golf season is over and nothing else is going on in my life,” said Testaverde, who has been issued No. 14, the same number he wore as a rookie 19 years ago in Tampa Bay. “But all kidding aside, a lot of my friends and family asked me why I’m still doing this and the simple reason is because I still think I can go out on the field and be productive if need be. I can come in and hopefully help this team get to their goal. And I’m here because I love playing football. That’s the bottom line.” [continue]

Actually, nfl.com has said that there are thousands of rumors going around as to why they signed him, but most of all it has NOTHING to do with problems with Tom Brady or Cassel.
Belichick and Vinny T are close friends, so maybe Vinny just wanted a job! Make some extra quiche.
He's probably just the kind of guy who cant deal with retirement. Like he needs to be around it, ya know?

They took a chance and carried only 2 QBs so far this year and now that they have some spots on the roster, who beter than Vinny to come in and be on scout team and be a veteran presence. Plus he has the same birthday as me - November 13th!

i agree..if brady were to go out..and they needed a veteran to guide cassel and show him what to do...why not just use brady!!!!!!! and for a 3rd string sign another young qb that is out there..im sure jessie palmer or brooks bollinger dont have a job...and they would make fine 3rd strings for a lot cheaper

with or and not using a value ticket?:) i'd say no, yet he's a QB and the HOF electorate are idiots. to boot, he would retire, then comeback and lead a crew to the large Bowl as he throws ninety 8 TDs and 5,000 yards. we do not understand. As is, i'd say no. sturdiness does not get you in. Or I could say it shouldn't get a guy in. HOF electorate have made some questionable judgements.

Tampa Bay misses Vinny-he's an asset wherever he stands. He is inspiration to the newbies and I'm sure has much to still offer-even if you think he might be going blind. How old are you? 5?!

He's the only QB in NFL history to throw a touchdown in 19 consecutive seasons.
He just keeps going.... and going........
He'll make it 20 seasons, just watch.
