darn right there should be. say 10% if i make 100 bucks i give the gov 10, if i make 1,000 i give em 100, if i make 1,000,000 i give em 100,000, seems fair to me, unlike now where thoe more i make the less i bring home. before my last pay raise i brought home more money, im paying almost 54% of my income in taxes. the harder i work, the more i pay, for the people who arent working.. thats not fair to me.

If you look there are quiet a few flat taxes in the US. Sales taxes are basically a flat tax...most city income taxes are a flat 1-2% of your gross earnings..

It would make more money for the government if we all paid a flat 5 or 6% of earned income above the first $20,000 per year. (I choose that $ amount based on the poverty level.)

But then the question is do you tax SS benefits...I don't think so as you have already "earned" that money when you contributed to SS as you worked. Do you tax retirement income from other sources? How do you keep the rich from hiding their income? They do it now...daily.

I think a simple flat tax is a great solution...it would help low and middle income Americans! It would be great if the rich would be foced to pay their fair share. Instead of them having the accountants find creative ways to hide or disquise their money. As would it be fair if American business would pay their fair share of taxes as well.

It's funny when you look at American History we fought a war over unreasonable taxes...and yet we do it continuely now with many hidden taxes...tacked on to items we cannot live without. Look at a gallon of Gas....in PA they are talking about adding $.22 to a gallon of gas to pay for road repair...as if we haven't suffered enough with the price of gas rising above $3.00 this year. When will the maddness end?!!!

I am all for either a flat tax or a national sales tax. I don't like the idea of a flat tax because they still get to tax what you make.

I think a sales tax makes more sense because 1) it eliminates a lot of enforcement people at the IRS and cheating on the current tax forms and 2) our retailers already collect state and local sales tax. This would be just a minor change in a point of sale system for the stores to make to begin charging the tax.

Flat tax is a great idea but the politicians have to much control of the tax codes. The tax codes are what give them real power to manipulate business. Personally I would prefer a national sales tax. that way money you save is not taxed. You only get taxed when you spend you money. We could make it fair by giving lower income families a tax refund each year based on what they spent in taxes. This would also allow us to eliminate the IRS and the bureaucracy that goes with it eliminating some cost to the government.

Although theoretically the Flat Tax sounds like a PHENOMENAL idea, the issue is that it still leaves massive holes for politicians to throw loops through.

A Flat Tax is based on Income... NOT worth.

Thus Paris Hilton would pay virtually no taxes on her inherited fortune since it is not "income" per se.

Money invested in tax shelters would still be excluded from taxation.

Also, those with reportable incomes below the taxation level or with "illegal" incomes would pay no taxes at all.

The net result is that our complex tax system would improve for a while, but as new deductions and loopholes were added, it would return to virtually the same system we have today.

My belief is that a better solution is the implementation of the Fair Tax. Eliminate income tax altogether (because is technically penalizes you for working) and implement a higher sales tax on all products AND services.

If you are Paris Hilton and spend your inheritance... you get taxed.
When you try and spend that tax sheltered money for a 2nd home in Key West... you get taxed
If you sell drugs and buy that Escalade... you get taxed
If you pay a housekeeper... you get taxed

If you are a little old lady on Social Security and you wear the same shoes you've had for 10 years, keep that Buick you;ve owned for 10 years, etc., then you get to avoid more tax than those who consume more.

Taxation in and of itself is a necessary evil, but why not make it equitable? Why someone with Millions in net worth can avoid taxes altogether because of loopholes and shelters isincorrigible. Make em pay their fair share for every Bentley they buy, Plane they fuel, or Louis Vuitton bag they sport.

My 2 Cents.

The flat tax is one of those things that look good on paper, but do you really think that our government will get it right. Look at the prescription drug program for seniors and how messed up that is to find an answer to the flat tax. I would just like to see everybody pay their fair share, no exemptions for the rich, and no tax for the poor.

If you want, though I don't support it in my own country. After all, after a certain time, more money only constitutes a luxury, and the money one needs certainly should be taxed less than the money that the person would probably use to buy fancy resorts abroad.

Here, the tax varies between 5-30%. However, there is a fair recompense in public services such as free education and such.

A flat tax merely punishes the people who are struggling the most.

After you have paid for basic necessities such as food and housing your income is a luxury. This should luxurious excess should be taxed more heavily to ease the burdon on those worse off.

Well there are pro and cons.... but a flat tax will never be passed because so many of us use the tax breaks available... Home taxes and interest.... The people who probably would benefit the most are the middle class... but they won't get it....

A flat tax sounds great for me. It would be more equitable. The less you make, the less you pay and vice-versa. Big moniied people are keeping it out of consideration with their lobby. The Democrats claim that it punishes the poor people, but that is hogwash. Also do away with the "Earned Income Credit" and all of the other tax dodges so that the field is evened out.

Yes, with regulations. Imagine a flat tax, at a rate we can't afford.
