I hate to have to say it, but I fear the US of A takes first prize in the Silly Stakes. On the other hand when I look a t the reasons for the sillyness.... when I really dissect it ....I am optimistic. America is i n the process of a huge metamorphosis which has been happening for a long time because in "cosmic terms" nothing happens fast. America is, indeed a huge cauldron into which peoples from all over the world, from totally different lifestyles, social structures, spiritual beliefs and cultures, have poured themselves.
Any good cook knows that the most magnificent pot of stew is the one that has been allowed to simmer slowly over time. Each ingredient was important, but it takes awhile for them all to blend, and their flavors merge into the final unique taste. When it's People in that stew pot, they are all glad to identify themselves with the whole content (in this case, called America), yet at the same time, still demanding to keep the full identity of their origins.
That, however, isn't the "silly" part. It gets downright ridiculous when every one of the "ingredients" seems to be battling with the others over who's better. But I believe that's just the process - part of what it takes to eventually blend them all into one superb flavor. America isn't there yet, and very possibly none of today's adults will be alive to "taste" the end result, so we will all go on "being silly" for many more decades yet. There is nothing in the world wrong with each of us remembering where he came from. But we are all going to have to start using the same route map to plot where we're going, instead of a zillion different ones. Right now, THAT is what is qualifying us for the "silly prize"
