I always hear of the Chargers playing Martyball, something to do with their coach, but I have no idea what it is. Anyone know?

"Martyball" was coined when Marty Schottenheimer was the coach of his former teams (Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs) by his critics for conservative offensive plays, and the fact that he couldn't win the "big game".

Nevertheless, Marty is one of the top 10 most winning NFL coaches and he's awesome. He's going to take the Chargers to the big game. Go Marty! Go Chargers!

It is named for their coach, and this wasn't from this year. Contrary to what Borat thought this has nothing to do with Phillip Rivers. This is something that Marty has been doing through most if not all his coaching carrer and that is how we ended up coming up with Marty Ball as a real term. Andy pretty much covered what it is. Thing is he was doing the same thing with Chiefs and proably the Browns, although I don't really remember his coaching with them. It is making the most conservative play calling basically. I have seen them lose leads and he keeps playing that style late in the game because it seems like he doesn't know what else to do. That is what makes it Martyball. He won't open it back up or take any real risks late in the game. That's why people figure he will never lead a team anywhere. Another thing is he plays for the field goal late in the game as they say. Just trying to move the ball close enough to get the field goal and is happy with that. Once a team plays to protect a lead they usually end up giving it up because the other team sees what you are doing.

It's playing too conservative. Basically, if you have a pretty good defense and a lead in points, you run down the clock "controlling the ball" by running every down (even if it's like 3rd&8), even if the lead is only a couple of points. It's basically why the Chargers lost the Ravens game. They were too afraid to let Rivers go at it.

It's a pretty bad policy, because even good defenses (ala the Bolts) can break down (I hate to say it being a Chargers fan, but our D has been pretty inconsistant, whether it's arm-tackling big RBs or coverage breaking down. Lately we've actually been overpowering people w/Offense or pulling a quick stop in the last seconds of the game ----you can win on that, but I really wish we'd get more consistant, just to be more secure)

Martyball, obviously named for Marty Schottenheimer, is named for his play calling. they were playing very conservatively because he was trying to protect his young QB from making mistakes and it was that conservative play that almost cost them a few games.

Lately they've been opening it up and Rivers has been lighting defenses up
