Let's multiply something by -2. The second equation!

-2x -2y = -8
-10x +2y = -16

Now add the two equations:

-12x = -24
x = 2

From the first of your equations, you can see that y = 2 also.

Now we can check all this in the second of your equations:

5(2) - 2 = 8
Yes!!!

You can see that LastOfTheAfros (below) is wrong. x = 1 and y = 3 certainly don't satisfy your second equation.

make the y on the bottom equal to the y on the top by multiplying the bottom by negative two. then you eliminate the y's subtract the negative two from the negative ten and subtract the negative eight on top from the negative sixteen on the bottom. then divide negative eight x and the negative eight on the end and you get one. then you use substitution to solve for y.x=1 and y=3.
