If your router has a built in switch/hub then there should be no reason to set up your system as a "host". Just plug them both into the router (avoid trying wireless for the moment) then see if you have a link light on each port and on each socket on the PCs.

You may need to allocate ip adresses to each PC if you do not have DHCP on the router.

Your router company tech support will help you with this. Most have service 24/7, at least Linksys does. Very good help.

well...what type of ISP do you have?? R both your desktop and Laptop able to connect to the internet. r u only having difficulty connecting your laptop to your desktop? Lets say hypothetically you hv dsl line coming in and hooked up to a dsl modem...from there its hooked to a router which allows you to connect to diffferent computers and laptops...if you are tryin to connect ur laptop to your desktop you will have to create a "Workgroup" name and it has to be the same on both computers...once you hv created the "workgroup" you can go to network connections and click on computers near me....your desktop computers name should show up on your laptop....if you want to access files onto the desktop ....you will have to allow "sharing" on your desktop so that you can retrieve data you have on your desktop through ur laptop.......
