Typically, the only shelters that GET gov't funding is the small city pounds, etc. Animal control, basically. These are among the "highest kill" shelters. They are the shelters that euthanize a dog after 5 days, etc.
The shelters I support are no-kill. They will keep an animal as long as it takes to find it a home. They do not kill an animal to make room for more. If they were govt funded, they'd be forced to. In fact, many of these shelters get interfered with ANYWAY! There was recently a shelter near me that was affected by a new ordinance passed by the county. It said that a dog could not be housed there "permanently" or they'd lose their shelter status.... and by "permanently", they meant over 6 months. Being a no kill shelter, they have dogs there that have been there for years. Ones that are old or unadoptable. I don't know what ever became of the situation.
Anyway... yes, some recieve SOME funding from the gov't... but the good ones don't. They need our help. If you can't donate financially, consider donating items or holding a "pet food drive". Foster a litter of kittens or puppies, etc.

Hi, I work at a Shelter, Most counties give their shelter a small operating budget but its not much..animals are on the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to funding Hospitals,ect..and really people should come first.BUT it does get frustrating because most county run shelters lose money on every adoption .They arent really self-supporting. Private Shelters that depend on donations suffer too. They do get the tax free status, and most shelters I know of get free dog food. Its the medical that kills you. I dont know if I feel its unfair. I think people who dump their animals should be charged a big fee, That would help. There are Grants galore out there that shelters can get they just have to apply.Goverment does pay in the long run.

For all you people putting forward NO, i imagine your questioning about how the adverse lil animals get killed for no reason. My husband works for animal facilities and that i recognize what negative aspects there are. How might want to you experience if a rabid canines growls and tries to bites you and chases you? Or a feral cat that scratches and bites you until eventually you BLEED. OR the sick little kittens that are going to have a loooong drawn out lack of existence. i'm all in favour of the killing of those animals because it makes the commonly used public AND different animals safer! And no I dont consider them killing animals after a week yet that purely takes position at FEW animal shelters contained in the rustic. What else might want to you do with the overpopulated animals? they say there is 7 canines for a million human...thats the reason everybody could spay or neuter their canines and cats. so that they dont have un necessary placed downs.

The animal shelter section thrives quite well from public support.
Most charities, animal related or otherwise, prefer to do their own fundraising.
If you go to government for funding, you then get government interference with how you run your organisation.
So, choose a charity and support it! They need your help.

There are too many of them around, it would cost a kings ransom to fund them all! No I think its fair that they raise their own funds, governments have trouble funding care for humans so they could not argue that funding care for animals was right and good use of treasury funds :D

As much as I love animals I agree with Huggy. I like to give to these charities as they remind me that not all dogs are as lucky as mine and she was a rehome. I also like to think of it as Kharma - thanking the universe for bringing Tia into my life and making it so much better.
