Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world, the tallest Mountain is actually Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The height of this mountain is 10,203 M but the base of the mountain is the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Mt. Everest is 8,848 M above Sea Level making it the highest mountain in the world.

It really depends on whether one measures distance above sea level or distance from its base. In terms of distance above the base, most give the record to Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii, which rises straight from the ocean floor. Yet another possibility would be to consider how high a mountain that is not partially underwater rises compared to surrounding landforms. In this case many of the peaks in the Sierra Nevada and Alaska ranges rise higher than Everest.
