They should be more concerned about drinking and hard drugs!
I suppose they want to see smoking abolished so they can pick up the tab and pay all the taxes (currently on cigs) which will be transferred to property taxes.

If someone thinks you're doing something unpleasant or harmful (to yourself and/or others), they will be tempted to tell you so, and sometimes they just do so in a way that seems patronizing. And there's the possibility (just a possibility) that you don't like being told that something you like is bad, so you become oversensitive and find it patronizing. Maybe those people were just untactful.
Some people are more accepting of smokers, but some feel unhappy that their own health should suffer because someone else near them has the unhealthy habit. The solution is just to be considerate and refrain from smoking around people whom you know don't like it - you wouldn't sneeze into anyone's face if you have a flu, so same goes for smoking away from other people.
Cutting smoking will also lessen your chance of not just cancer, but also COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), which is a much more common and chronic disease that you can never cure or improve, only control. If you've already started a 'smoker's cough', it's time to check with your physician if you have COPD.
That was a sincere tidbit of info there that I hope might help you, hope it didn't come across as patronizing :) I have lots of friends who've been smoking for ages (and gave me loads of their second-hand smoke along the way) - they didn't mind the health risks when they were younger, saying that smoking added to their quality of life by relaxing them, giving them a reason to take breaks from work, felt good on cold days, networking with other smokers on smoke breaks, etc. Unfortunately, many of them are starting to suffer for it now that they're reaching their 30s and 40s.
Another reason to quit: it really does make you age faster. One can usually tell who's a smoker by comparing their facial age with their actual age.

Because its not only horrible for you, but those around you as well. I used to smoke also myself so I'm not judging or patronizing, but it is bad for you. Proof after proof after proof after proof.

Because it's unhealthy for the smoker and those around them. I don't use condescension when discussing smoking. I'm pretty vehement.
