Can your employer read emails sent by you from other email services such as Yahoo mail? I know that they have read my company email. I am wondering if they can access other emails that have been sent from yahoo. I am on their server so I was wondering if they could somehow read those also. Also, is there a program that can tell you that another party has read your emails other than you? The company uses Outlook. I would like to know. There have been some "slip ups" around the office and I think that the company can read any and all mail sent on their server.

If you're not sure then I would simply not do it. Either that or write some fake phoney emails about how GREAT your boss is and how handsome the IT guy is and how you secretly have a huge crush on him. If he acts funny around you, you'll have your answer...

If the message hits their mail server they can read it. It is not as easy for them to read mail that never resides on the server. In other words mail sent from a yahoo account to another yahoo account never uses the company mail server. They could however be monitoring your activity on the internet as well as your email in which case they may see everything that you do on the internet. I would just take care of your personal business on your own time and stick to doing your job while you are at work. Most companies allow limited personal email use as long as the emails are not obscene or objectionable. You should have received a set of rules as to what the company allows on their computers when you started your job, if you have never been told I would ask, because where your job is concerned ignorance is not bliss and it could cost you your job.

Your company's server is a gateway that all incoming / outgoing mail goes through. They have access to the server and can read anything that comes in or goes out. [Whether they do or not is another story.]

The server is also backed up for legal / techincal purposes. If you delete the message, 10 years from now they could still go back and see that it came in or went out from your e-mail box.

No individual program that I am aware of will connect to your company's outlook server and tell you if they have read your e-mail. They are doing this on the server side, so what you do on your side (the client PC) just does not matter.

Do not send or receive anything you do not want your company to see.

As long as you are using your company's equipment (servers, computer, etc) it is legal for them to read emails coming in and going out, if they choose to. We (my company) also uses Outlook and we have had this very same problem. We had an IT guy monitoring every one's in/out traffic when it was discovered that one of us was abusing an IM product by sending and receiving sexually explicit messages during work hours. As I say, it's perfectly legal. There's an old saying in IT... NEVER commit anything to an email that you don't want EVERYONE to know about.

It doesn't matter what email service sent the mail, the admin of your company mail server can access any account.

Unfortunately your whole IT department can view any and all emails you send and receive at work. It is their machine and their time though and they are perfectly within their rights. If you use the post office computers for personal business you get fired.
