While setting up an online bill pay account and error was made in the account number. Now the company wants to charge a NSF fee because they couldn't verify the account. Is this legal?

Call the company and explain the situation. They can often reverse the charge on your account when you correct the situation. Most places are reasonable.

Absolutely. As the error was 100% your fault, you were probably shown at least one review screen and given the opportunity to verify it, the company has the right to charge the fee.

If this is a company that you have done business with for a while and you are normally a customer in good standing, just call them and ask if they will reverse the charge because you made a mistake. Some will value your business, others won't.
