you could use any polished glass surface if you really wanted. coke is expensive, and when you dont have the dough to waste any, a mirror is the most economical way to go.

Because you want to get every last little speck, and it's easier to spot on a mirror.

It's a nice flat, hard surface, that's easily portable, and one can see what one is doing.
