Prostitution- offering sex for money is NOT illegal in the UK.
However safety features for the prostitutes, and for society are not in place.
I believe whether we want it or not prostitution will continue because there is the demand for it. Therefore I would like to see
better provisions for the service, taking in the account of the the needs of society, the sex workers, and the wife's and husbands of some of the people who will be clients.
I am in favour of prostitution continuing, and becoming safer and more open.

Would potentially be more money for the government (in taxes) and would arguably give the "right" people control over the industry rather than the thuggish pimps in charge at the moment - making it better, more lucrative and safer for the girls. Probably safer for the punters too - especially if it meant that the girls were checked more often for eg Aids. VD is on the rise so maybe it's an opportune time to discuss this. It should be better for everyone (except the nasty crooks behind the scenes who currently control the prostitutes) and would probably lessen the stigma of going to prostitutes if it was all state-run. Seems to work eg in Holland

Prostitution is legal in the UK - however, soliciting, running a brothel and "living off immoral earnings" are illegal. Currently prostitutes can work independently, but if they band together for safety they can be seen to be working illegally.

Arguments for: Regulation could mean that people working in prostitution get better protection from violence, sexual violence, and people trafficking. There could be greater input of sexual health workers to help prevent transmission of STIs. The aim would be to break the link between prostitution and serious offending including drug-related and organised crime, people smuggling, etc.

Arguments against: If you believe that it is inherently wrong for one person to sell sex to another, then obviously you would not want to relax the current laws. Some schemes operate by designating certain areas as acceptable zones where brothels operate, and of course local residents might have something to say about this.

I definately think they should be legal, prostitution has been going on from the beginning of time, when are people gonna accept it.
At least then the girls can do their business in saftey proper working conditions etc regular health tests, and somewhere safe to be with their "clients" where they aren't going to be murdered.
I used to live in germany and it is so sexually liberal over there they cater for every sexual fantasy and there are prostitutes houses all over some may say this it a bad thing, but compared to this country there are significant less rapes, child abductions and phedophilia etc doesn't that make you think a little.

Yes. There have always been, and will always be prostitution. Legislation allowing brothels could allow for certificated girls over the age of 18 with regular health checks, and there would be less opportunity for them to be abused. Legislation would also lessen the chances of underage girls being lured into it as I believe most punters would rather go to a clean location with a girl free of disease than chance picking a girl off the street, so the streetwalkers would fade out to some extent. It would be a nicer world with no prostitution, but that's not going to happen, and putting your head in the sand doesn't make it go away.

Prostitutes are neither legal nor illegal. When taken to court, the charge is one of soliciting. Those managing them can be charged with brothel keeping. As things are, they don't pay tax on their earnings and neither do their pimps.

Advantages of legalisation of brothels: payment of revenue: income tax, VAT, corporation tax and possibly increased council charges for an official business. Insistence on regular medical check ups. Charges could be imposed for these, which means more money exchanging hands.

Disadvantages: as there would be many unofficial practitioners, there would still be a need to prosecute for soliciting. The nuisance wouldn't be removed from our streets and the freelancers would charge less, spread disease more widely and live in dread of being prosecuted for plying their trade without being registered.

Conclusion: what would be the point?

I think so. Regardless of whether you legalise it or not, there will always be prostitutes, A lot of them serving the very people who make the laws. In a world with some pretty damn terrible sexually transmitted diseases going around legalising it would pave the way for screening to look after the people that they service and the prostitutes themselves.

prostitution should be legalised.

it's the 'oldest profession' after all.

the women that do this deserve the right to be safe and healthy. also it would help to stop the spread of diseases and drug habits

legalising it would put a stop to pimps and dangerous clients.

the only downside i can see to legalisation is that some men would be put off going if it was all above board so the prostitutes may not make as much money.

I think they need to be legal so that they can have the protection and health care they need ...not the criminalisation they suffer now..men will always use prostitutes and at time has told banning something never stops it happening it just makes more victims out of the situation.
