This means software on your computer is trying to drive your monitor at a resolution / refresh rate it doesn't support.
Most LCDs (flat panel) support 1280x1024 at refresh rates of at least 60hz. If you have a CRT (oldschool "TV type" monitor) then it's hard to say what it supports, but start at 800x600 @60hz and work your way up.
The actual quality of the graphics has no bearing on whether your monitor can display them, only on how fast your video card can draw them. Don't worry about settings like "[low|medium|high] detail", FSAA, filtering, or texture quality. Once you get it displaying on the screen you can play with those to get a good FPS (frames per second).

Check if the game supports your resulation settings, if not put the settings to the required ones before you start. Also try to upgrade your video card.

you got the graphics for the game turned up to high, if they have a game settings or safe mode, go into that and reduce it to 1024x768 or something.
