I had a similiar problem once.
I lived in an apartment with my girlfriend (who was gay AND black) in this little christian middle of nowhere town.
My first instinct was to make friends, prove that we werent bad people, and at first we thought it worked.
Unfortunately, all that did was prove to the neighborhood that two people that were different from all of them had moved in, and not even two days later, rocks were thrown at our window. People spray painted FAG on our door, and then broke into our house and smashed our things into peices.
The strain of the whole thing, ruined a lot more than just stuff for us. The relationship fell apart, and neither one of us felt really comfortable around people after that.
So the suggestion i might make to you, is that if you know that theyre already a problem. Protect your family first. Mention to the police station that you would like someone to patrol your street more frequently, and find a way to get your family out of there. In a sense, that will make them feel like they have won, but i would tell you to let them. That disgusting mindset wont ever be won over. The day that they understand that "different" doesnt mean bad, will be long after we die.
If you decide to stay, i might suggest staying well protected. Be careful. If one of them tries to hurt you or your family, and it takes you hurting them for them to stop, they will all come after you.
oh, and be brave.

I hate to say this but the best thing to do is move. The mentality of those people can be dangerous. I know it is wrong but the only way you can get the law to seriously pay attention is when someone gets hurt (proof) then its to late. They are wrong, totally wrong but the only good thing is get your family safe. I can't see anything good about trying to deal with those idiots. They will think that they won BELIEVE ME what goes around comes around they will get theirs and it wont be pretty. Don't worry just think what is more intelligent to deal with. That 24 an hour threat, or get your family to safety. I wish I had a better answer.

If they are truly racist--expect overt negativity. Know that, no matter how positive or passive you may be, they are waiting for the right situation to carry out a depraved act of inhumanity. These people are motivated by ignorance, anger, competition for limited resources, and a lack of human decency for non-whites. It would be foolish to continue living in that environment unless, you can motivate your neighbors and the Police to monitor their actions constantly. Listen, have you ever heard of a racist changing his or her perspective without going to prison or before committing some act of depravity. Be watchful and prepared for anything--including arming yourself to protect what you've worked to obtain. If you have children be careful--always supervise them while outdoors, any small infraction can lead to unexpected B.S.!

If you feel that uncomfortable... move......
How long have you lived there?..... If you've lived there longer than 6 months or a year, then I'd suggest a move.....
But, if about 2 or 3 years and they've been there quite as long... I can't say I have pitty for you because you have subject yourself to being beside people whom you know full well don't like you.....
Just live...... and pay them no mind, lest they make an attempt to do harm to you or your family......
Document everything!!!!
I say, in this day and age, "go ahead and hit me!".... and get your best out of it... Go ahead and beat the hell out of me..... Because when you're done..... I'm taking your house, your car, your kids, first born (I like kids, I'm not prejudiced), your keys, your job....
Yeah... I'll sue ya!
your sister,
Ginger

If its the whole neighbourhood then probably move, but if its just your neighbour then stay, don't feel threatened, treat em like normal neighbours and say hi and stuff, it will freak em out that your not worried or intimidated by them. If they start being abusive then you should contact the police
