We just recently moved into an old house with an oil furnace. Recently I've noticed a black substance in our noses, then black residue on EVERYTHING in the house. Can this be harmful? Is it normal for an oil furnace to leave this type of residue? Helllppp!!

Stop what your doing and turn the furnace off, right now, go down there and turn everything off on it. If you know little about it, and it sounds like it, call a repair man in now, someone that knows what they're talking about, explain it to them.

What's happening is the furnace is simply chocking for air, either your chimney needs cleaning, the draft is plugged, the furnace is not set right, it's going to start filling with fuel and flood, it's a hazardous condition. You are in danger now.

No it is absolutely not normal- Sounds to me like you have a crack in the Heat Exchanger on the furnace. If not a plugged up Flu. But the HE sounds most logical for this problem. This is a big job, and the heat should be shut down now, you are also getting Carbon Monoxide.

It is dangerous, it sounds like carbon build up, not properly vented chimney. Get a CO detector, have someone come fix it for you ASAP. I had a problem recently with my heat, I was breathing in that black residue too, I got it fixed and I got a CO detector.

some old oil furnaces may have a crack in the heat exchange,,,, as bill on here has said,,, but it may also be another possibility ,,, the nozzle may be stopped up and and the cone could be burned,,, sounds like you need routine maintenance on this unit,,, you can tell very easily if you have a crack in the heat exchange,,, have the service man ,, to check it out,,, good luck,,,
