Women produce milk from their breasts when not pregnant if they have a hormone imbalance or are suffering from stress. It can also be caused by the menopause and in some cases through over stimulation.
The best thing to do is go and see a doctor who will give an examination. If the milk is dicoloured at all, a doctor should be seen straight away as this could be a sign of an infection.

i've not been pregnant for 16 and a half months now and i've produced milk the whole time. You dont produce milk while pregnant its after you were pregnant. If you are talking about producing milk when you've never been pregnant then i've never heard of this.

As a rule, they don't; when they do, it's just a fluke of hormones. If a woman who is not pregnant is experiencing an unexplained discharge from one or both nipples, and it's not related to her menstrual cycle (the same time every month), then it's a good idea to go to the doctor. Discharge from the nipple in a woman who's not nursing or pregnant can be a sign of breast cancer.

Could be a thyroid problem or a tumor on the pituitary gland. There are a couple of meds that induce lactation, so if you were taking one of those that could explain it as well. If you aren't PG or don't have a young baby, I'd suggest seeing your doctor.

They don't. There is such a thing as a discharge from the nipple which needs to be looked at by a doctor. I am not a doctor and so cannot comment. Presumably, you have read false information.

The production of breastmilk is caused by hormones, hormones can be triggered by many things disease, drug side effects, or your brain (see false pregnancy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_pregnancy)
Many newborns are born lactating as well due to exposure to their mom's hormones.
Both male and female mammals can lactate if they have the right hormones in their blood.
However, if you are lactating and not pregnant you should seek medical attention to rule out serious diseases.
