My housemate is in the habit of turning everthing off when not being used - switching tv off at the wall etc. He also does this with the boiler for hot water / heating. His only reason is because the pilot light is wasting gas. I was wondering if it's worth it.

You are better off leaving the pilot light on.Although it is a small flame, it can keep the water in your boiler warmish so you don't need to run the water too much before its hot.

If you are using the hot water daily, No its not worth it- it does of course waste gas, but it is not worth relighting it every time you want hot water. I also make sure everything is off, but not the pilot.
