Many plants will die if they don't get a period of darkness. Many city engineers found this out when they started planting trees in downtown areas. The trees kept failing and they found out it was because as soon as the sun went down the street lights would come on and the trees were getting light 24 hrs. This killed them. Now they have lists of plants that can survive in continuous light and they choose from that list.

As I mentioned there are some plants that will tolerate light 24/7.

Most plants do need a period of rest. There are some plants that won't bloom if they are in the light 24/7 (poinsettias are a good example). Also, if they get too much light, many plants will start to have tight or mal-formed leaves, as the plant literally tries to "get away" from the light.

Well, they can be trained. I have plants that I've had for over 20 years and they get light 24/7 except some summers I take them outside for three months. They have not been out for five years now though. The light in my plant room consists of four 40 watt flourescent lights overhead, and four more 20 watt on the walls. They never go off unless the electricity is out. They are lovely - schefflera, some sort of rain-tree - starts with dra...., several philedendroms. I can't spell any of these names you can see.

Yes, it needs photosynthesis for food, some plants, very few can stand without light for some periods but, not many.

It does not hurt the plant in ANY way if it never saw darkness.
