Back in the pre-historic days of the computer (like 30 years ago), a computer was a person who used an electronic information system. Over time, the term shifted from the person to the machine they were using. The electronic information system became the "computer" and the person using it the "operator".

That is the way the terms are used today
The computer is the machine
The operator is the person using using it
