"He shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient." -- U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section III

So yeah is fairly similar.

Know nothing about the Queens speech, but the state of the union is where the president talks about all the things he's like to see the country do. It's now made for TV where each side jumps up and claps the bad guys don't (you pick which are which). It means nothing and 99% is forgotten before people find the exit.

At one time it was a letter sent to the congress, maybe then it had some value, now from many years of reading the thing it's a waste of time. I bet 1 person in 100000 could not tell you 1 thing Bush said last year.

Could I venture that it's about the State of the Union? You know, a report by the President on what is happening during his watch, in the USA.

It should be a review of the happenings over the past year, and what should happen the next year. Unfortunately, half the time it's a statement of the wonderful things that have happened, with the negatives left out.
