TOSHIBA A-105, Being promoted now at discount retailers.
My wife has a A-85 and it's been great. The later models have more RAM and larger hard-drives. Built in wi-fi and very reliable.

Try pc world or staples they will sort you out.
but usually you get what you pay for with laptops,if you buy the cheapest you can guarantee that you will upgrade within 12 months.
your best bet is go in tell them what you want it for and take it from there.
also you can check out john lewis, they are roughly the same price as everywhere else except you get 2 years warranty not 1.

I would avoid PC world, I was in the same situation as you, didn't know much about computers, but knew how much I wanted to spend, and what I wanted to use the computer for - I called a company called EuroPC and they were very helpful in recommending the right laptop for me.
They sell reconditioned models, but they are in perfect condition, you wouldn't know they were recons.
They have a website so check it out and give them a call, its great impartial advice, and you could get yourself a bargain!!

Try Dell. Ring them up when you've found one you like, and that that you've found one with the same specification from Acer and Acer are offering it for less. Then say you want to buy from Dell because you've heard their technical support and after-sales care is really good and they might offer you a discount. I got mine from Dell with a bit of a discount after saying that! But don't buy from Acer, their technical support's pretty poor, whereas with Dell they'll usually send someone out to look at your computer at your house/office rather than you having to take it somewhere.

go into PC world or your local computer store and talk to someone there. they will be able to help you out and advise you on what one to buy. There are many good deals out at the moment, but prehap wait till January sales and after xmas, if you can... could get a even better deal!

You could try dell. you just order online. We have the lap top at work and they are very good. Back up and after sales support is pretty good too.

Get a friend who knows about that stuff to help you out, the sales reps will fob you off with anything! Or if you are a student, your university will have good deals going.
