All good answers so far, however, after cleaning if the smell remains, try toothpaste (a lot) on crumpled old newspaper. It may take some time, days even to extract the odors.

I moved into a place once, a rental, and the fridge and freezer was so bad I almost lost me lunch. The previous tenant left old deer meat in the freezer and the landlord turned off the power 3 days before I moved in. Needless to say nothing worked, then I tried the newspapers with toothpaste. I helped some, but not enough. I then used Sol-u-Mel straight from the bottle on the newspapers. It took 4 days, but it worked.
Sol-u-Mel is a product of The Melaleuca company. You can purchase by calling 1-800-282-3000. They deliver to most of the USA.

Good luck!

Take everything out. Throw away all that is old and smells. Wash inside with mild soap and water. Put stuff back in and include an open box of baking soda. You must clean on a regular schedule just like this. I do it every week before going to grocery store.
