i thought you could do your probation were you wanted with in your state

My understanding is that when you have been convicted of a crime, your fate is 100% up to the judge or jury.

The judge can decide to either jail you, or allow probation. If he has the power to incarcerate you, why wouldn't he have the power to decide where you "do your probabtion"?

Yes the judge makes that decision.

Unfortunately you shouldn't have done whatever you did. As a result, you have to do what the judge says. Be glad that he really didn't tromp down on you.
