I don't spend all my time cleaning, like some people must, but this programme makes me feel so relieved that my house is 'normal'! A bit cluttered, a bit too much dust & dog hair... but normal.

Why do these people let their homes get to this state? Why do they chuck rubbish in the sink? Not change the bedding every now & then? Not wash up - do they eat off dirty plates? And as for what's in the fridge...

The cases on this show are extreme ones. Often these people that hoard are also suffering from extreme cases of OCD. Sometimes these people are actually suffering from a warped perfectionism. A fear of doing things wrong that they are completely paralyzed from doing ANYTHING. Sometimes it's a lack of organization. Hoarders often have emotional problems and what you see in the house is indicative of how they feel inside. You could clean the house spotless for them and inside of a week it will be back to the way it was unless the occupant cleans up what is going on in their "heads". While gross it is a very sad condition. Think of the overwhelming helplessness of not knowing where to begin. Look for an old episode of dr.phil and oprah who both did lengthy shows and follow-ups on this phenomena.

I think the show is very informative. They give some really good Ideas about cleaning. I never new using flat coke down the bog would clean it. Never thought of boiling water in the microwave with added lemon juice would get rid of the exploded beans or micro-meal.

My house isn't perfect, a few things under the bed like the odd sock (even found a malteser once) some dust along the back of the Telly and on the DVD player. Even a few crumbs down the couch cushion between the 50p I lost and the old telly remote. But I cannot see how people can live in that type of mess and stink. AND some have kids, used to have pets and somewhere in there is poor old granny (RIP)...

After watching the show I am VERY happy with the small amount of dirt and dust in my house.

Unfortunately after watching 5-6 episodes you get the general idea. I think its all about finding the dirtiest, smelliest house in the UK now.

I'm similar to you. Can be a bit obsessive at times and like things done in a certain way, but generally would say I'm normal with regards to cleaning habits.

I can only assume these people are depressed and let things spiral out of control until it's impossible to see a way out of it. Did you see it last night? This girl was apparently the life and the soul or a party and really good fun, etc, but you kind of got the feeling that this was all just a front and that perhaps she wasn't as happy as she made out. It's quite sad really.

I'm getting a bit bored of Kim and Aggie now with their vinegar, salt and lemon juice cleans all, and the way they scrape their fingers on peoples mining loo seats and floors, eeerrggg! How people can let the nation see their houses in that state is beyond me!

I agree. It is a good way of motivating you to hoover under the sofa (and other things that tend to get forgotten), but at the same time make you feel all smug that at least you don't have mold in the bath or dirty nappies in the kitchen....!

Also, the enviornmentalist in me likes the fact that they encourage the use of "natural" cleaners like lemon juice.

i think 'how clean is your house' is a set up... there is no way that people can actually live like that cos they would be constantly ill from all the bugs in the place... and if someone did live in that state, then surely they would be too ashamed to show their house on national tv?!

Some people are worse than animals. My daughter loves watching it (age 9) to see how filthy people can be.

I only watch it to make me feel better about the small pile of ironing I have hidden under the stairs!

i just dont know how people can let things get so disgusting.
i mean i'm not perfect but things will get to a state where i say to myself that something has to be done.
things being spotless is unnatural, a bit of mess means that the place is actually being lived in.

Yes, I have to agree with you that when I watch it I wonder what the hell those people are thinking when their home is being filled with, quite simply, filth!!! It also amazes me that people feel comfortable broadcasting themselves, as messy b******ds, on national television! Surely they must have work-colleagues and friends or their kids go to school! Why put themselves through that humiliation?
