The expression "backflushing" is mostly used for filters.
Imagine a filter removing unwanted material from a liquid. Now the bad stuff doesn't just disappear, it is stuck in the filter material. So from time to time, they reverse the flow of the liquid through the filter, taking the bad stuff with it, and discarding such contaminated mixture.
