I think its the egg. Since, organisms developed the ability to Lay eggs before birds came into. The egg is only for a better protection of the new born - if you think of general.

But if you want to stick to the chicken and egg of chicken only, then it is really not a question to answer. Its like asking what came first: man or women. Since even when human being was not developed properly there were both sexes in the earth. From whom human evolved.

Last time I went for a Chinese, I ordered Chicken Chow Mein and Egg Fried Rice... yet the Chicken Chow Mein came ten minutes after the Egg Fried Rice. So in this case, quiet clearly, the Egg came first. (Pathetic answer, I know... but a rather tired question you must admit).

It really depends if you believe in evolution then egg came first before it was a fish's egg which came to the land...and so forth

But if you believe in big bang then Chicken came first like all the other species...

This is really just a clever wording of the question "Do you believe in creationism, or evolution?" Because, from an evolutionary standpoint, the egg came first. While from a creationist standpoint, it was the chicken.
