Yes. Many Greek scholars fled the othoman menace going to Italy and other parts of Western Europe. They started to teach science and philosophy and ignited an irrevocable procedure as the Renaissance and the discovery of America. (Most propably Colombus himself was born in the island of Chios and immigrated along with many others to Italy. His own writings were in Greek.)

Constantinople was Greekified during the 7th Century AD, and whilst technically the capital of the Byzantine/Roman Empire, this empire did not include Italy or Rome. It was the empire of the Orthodox Catholics, not the Holy Roman (Roman Catholic) Empire.
The Renaissance came about due to social stability in the Mediterrannean, and due largely to the growth in power of the city state of Florence, and the personal wealth of the Medici family.
The discovery of America was largely due to the expansion of knowledge in ship building. Traditionally, the Phoenicians were the greatest boat builders, but their designs were not suitable for Ocean/Sea travel. The Dutch developped the designs of the Phoenicians with those of the Vikings, to create a new form of large ocean-capable ship. Many other European countries copied these designs, such as Henry VIIIth who built the Marie Rose and developed the birth of the British navy. These ships enabled the kind of exploration previously deemed impossible, and this led to the discovery of the Americas.

Renaissance and discovery of America originated from western Europe. Renaissance began in Italian. Discovery of America came from Spain. But, it is possible that the Fall of the last Muslim state (Grenada) in Spain has triggered the discovery of America, Since the catholic kings of Spain wanted to convert other peoples
