If it is stressing you or your baby then STOP!

However drinking for 10 or even 5 minutes is completely normal and some babies can drink a surprising amount in that time.

Be sure not to let your baby go too long without food though, some newborns do not quite know when they are hungry. I think under 6 weeks you aren't supposed to let them go longer than 5 hours, ever.

PS In most cases jaundice is not dangerous. If the jaundice started after the first 48 hours it is likely not dangerous. http://www.llli.org/NB/NBJanFeb93p12.html

Bottles are much easier to drink from than the breast. If you are not against bottles, maybe try breastmilk or formula by bottle, just long enough to get rid of the jaundice. I'm not saying stop breastfeeding, just maybe offer the bottle a time or two a day. Since they are easier to drink from, even a very sleepy baby may drink a little more that way. Good Luck.

I agree with the other responder. My 15 day old had jaundice as well. Your doctors point is probably that going to the bathroom helps the baby remove the toxins from their system, which it does. But sunlight is the best option! My doctor said the goal was 10 hours per day in the light, and to have the baby in a warm room with nothung but a diaper while in the sun. Honestly, we were able to do about half that, and my baby had gotten over it in 5 days.
I know that every child is different but if (God forbid) your baby was in the hospital for this they would treat it with a sunlamp.

It's not necessary for her to nurse every two hours! Yes the milk feedings do help the jaundice, but so does sunlight! If you have a very bright sunny window, let her sleep there until the jaundice is gone.
