Ovulation is the process in the menstrual cycle by which a mature ovarian follicle ruptures and discharges an ovum (also known as an oocyte, female gamete, or casually, an egg) that participates in reproduction. Ovulation also occurs in the estrous cycle of other animals, which differs in many fundamental ways to the menstrual cycle.
in simpler terms, ovulation is when an egg is released from one of your ovaries and is starting its way down the fallopian tubes to your uterus, where it will either be fertilized and you get pregnant, or it will not get fertilized and will exit your body, which is what is happening during your period.

Ovulation is simply when you release your egg from one of your ovaries. The egg is what your partner's sperm meets and fertalizes to create the baby. The days leading up to and after ovulation are simply just called that, the days leading up to and after. Ovulation day is simply ovulation day. Every woman ovulates on her own cycle. If you took 3 women with the same cycle length, lets say 28, they all probably would have different ovulation days. Mine was always on cycle day 9 or 10. Others ovulate closer to day 14 or 16. To take out the guess work go get a pack of ovulation predictor kits. They are sold next to the pregnancy tests at the store.

Ovulation is the moment when the mature egg pops out of the ovary. Most women are fertile for a few days leading up to that moment, becuase their cervical mucus (the fluid at the entrance to the uterus) is very liquidy, so sperm can swim through it. Those sperm can live inside the uterus and fallopian tubes (the tube between the ovary and uterus) for around 5 days. When the egg DOES pop out (ovulation), one of those sperm may find and fertilize it. But if the egg isn't fertilized, it dies and breaks up within about 24 hours. (Having sex the day after ovulation therefore probably won't result in pregnancy. The egg is already dead.) While there are some theories that having sex close to ovulation may increase the chance of having a boy (Y sperm are lighter and swim faster, so may have a better chance of getting to the egg), please don't get your heart set on one sex or the other. Any difference is VERY slight, and it's quite likely that you will have a girl.

Ovulation is the release of a single, mature egg from the ovarian follicle. The human ovary produces a multitude of ova during the course of a month, largest of which is expelled into the pelvic cavity and swept into the Fallopian tube. Ovulation does not follow a regular pattern between ovaries each cycle and which ovary releases the egg is fairly arbitrary. Once released, the egg is capable of being fertilized for 12 to 24 hours before it begins to disintegrate. If the released ovum or egg is fertilized and successfully implants, it results in pregnancy.
If the egg is not fertilized, it is passed from the reproductive tract during menstrual bleeding, which starts about two weeks after ovulation. Occasionally, cycles occur in which an egg is not released; these are called anovulatory cycles. Note that you can get your period even though you are not ovulating. Your ability to ovulate can vary from month to month.
Ovulation is the ideal period of your cycle when your chances of getting pregnant are highest. Your fertile period starts about 4-5 days before ovulation, and ends about 24-48 hours after it. This is because sperm can live in your body for approximately 4 to 5 days, and the egg can live for 24 to 48 hours after being released. In normally fertile couples there is a 25 percent chance of getting pregnant each cycle, meaning around 75 to 85 percent of women who have sex without using birth control will get pregnant within one year. You can boost your chances of getting pregnant by learning exactly when you ovulate by understanding the cyclic hormonal and physical changes that take place in your body each month.
