fingers are usually regarded as the hand-digits that do most of the work. However, in modern times the use of texting (via mobile phones) has started to change that...
in other languages thumbs are usually referred to as fingers - there's no differentiation. (eg. Spanish finger = dedo, thumb = dedo. The spanish people don't understand the english way of talking about the fingers and thumbs as two different entities...). Aren't we as Brits weird?!?!

If thumbs were considered fingers, they wouldn't be called "thumbs". Sounds silly I know, but it's the truth.
When some tells you they hurt their finger, do you think of their thumb or one of their fingers? Unless they say 'thumb' I always think one of the fingers.

Some people think of language, especially nouns ('labels') as fixed or definite.

Other people think of meaning ('intention') as fixed.

In fact, we only have a very vague grip on what we actually mean (like, are you talking about a jointy thing hanging off a hand, or a thing you poke buttons with in the lift?), and words change their meanings every time they are used (when I last said 'finger', did I mean EXACTLY what I meant the previous time?)

When we use a word, we're only guessing what the person hearing or reading it will think we meant. Often, we're wrong, but we only find out occasionally.
