once upon a time gay meant gay...homosexual!

I have just read a really funny article in the Guardian regarding the changing acceptable meaning of gay to mean just 'crap'

In what context do you use it?

Once upon a time it did not mean homosexual that was a term that started getting used during the late 60's and into the 70's. It used to mean bright or showy and even happiness.
I use it in the context like that person is gay. (homosexual)

Once upon a time "gay" meant "happy" - long before it meant "homosexual." For me, the word's meaning is completely dependent on context, as with many other words in the English language.

I use it to mean metrosexual actually :) The kind of guy who spends more time in front of a mirror preening than a teenage girl, someone who would check their hair or the shine in their smile in any available shiny surface, the plastic workout types... I find them really funny, and well, gay-er than a true homosexual. I am very good friends with two homosexual friends, and believe when I say you wouldn't think they are unless you knew very subtle cues about them.

English is not my language, so the meaning of the word for me is homosexual, we use the same word in Spanish. Later I learned that in English it also means happy. I didn't know it has been used as a synonym for crap. WHy?

Usually while chatting online with friends I spell it 'ghey' just to let them know I meant it as 'weird' or when I have no other word to describe something. Otherwise it means homosexuals or just plain happy.

If that word is used here in my area of the world it doesn't mean happy. I never use the word gay as in happy.

Gay means homosexual in the U.S.
That's not going to change any time soon.
Enjoy your lunch.
